March- Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens
If you want to have a fun day on a budget take a ride to Philadelphia’s
Magic Gardens located at 1020 South Street. This museum is a mosaic collage of murals and folk art created by the award winning artist, Isaiah Zagar. As you walk down South Street you can see his mosaic murals every where. He has created over 200 of them throughout the city.
When I entered the gallery I was astonished by how he pieces folk art, thousands of sparkling mirrors, hand-made tiles, and non- conventional items such as bottles, and bike wheels into a fabulous masterpiece of art work that spans over two blocks. Every inch of the museum is covered in mosaics. Much of his inspiration comes from his personal reflections that honor artists who sparked his creativity, as well as his family.
Zagar's creativity is ingenious. He mixes folk art- handmade works of art that reflect the stories, cultures and traditions of countries he has visited, with mosaic murals. The folk art pieces are works of art from Mexico, India, Peru, Ecuador, Morocco, Indonesia, and Guatemala. Many of the pieces are broken pieces of art work from his wife Julia’s, “Eye’s Gallery” store on 4th and South Street that were purchased from around the world that could not be sold. He also creates hand-made painted tiles and images throughout the museum, many of them hidden within the majestic mural walls and ceilings.
Whether you’re a lover of folk art, mosaics, ponder life’s mysteries or how God’s perfect timing can be perfectly displayed, this gallery is sure to please. As mosaic artist myself, it was a inspiring and healing experience.
PMG features many events throughout the year. Art exhibitions of local and international artists, guided tours, Twightlight in the Gardens-BYOB events with live music, and a happy hour garden party to name a few. You can visit their Website for details and times of the events.
After visiting PMG you may want to visit one of the many restaurants in the vicinity. I tried TRIA. It’s not only reasonably priced, but will tantalize your tastes buds with their decidatant menu of vegetarian and gourmet delights. I ordered their paprika bruschetta with white bean dip and pistachio cheese cake, which was delicious.
If you’re interested in mosaics you may want to visit my New Day Mosaics bookself located within The Spot on Landis Avenue in Vineland, NJ and find that special gift for someone.
