Philadelphia Flower Show 2019
As March comes in like a lion, you may want it to roar with color. For floral and nature lover’s, such as
myself, you most likely can’t wait to see the Crocus, Daffodils, and Tulips spring up out of the ground to
experience nature’s first sign of Spring.
While you wait in anticipation you might want to jump on PATCO, or drive to the Philadelphia
Convention Center for the Philadelphia Flower Show. This year’s theme is Flower Power. It runs March
2-10. What makes this year so special is that the Interflora World Cup 2019 is there. The last time it was
in the United States was 1985, in Detroit, Michigan. This competition is the Oscar of the floral designer
world’s showcase. Talented floral designers worldwide gather to display their artistry, hosted this year
by Florist’s Transworld Delivery-FTD.
Since it was the first day of the show, I was unaware that this spectacular event was taking place. As I
walked to the right upon entering the room I saw the flower power displays-Peace sign, Love sign, Old
Peace & Love truck, and a tent with Strobe lights and Blacklights inside. I was too young to really grasp
this generational movement of love and peace, although I enjoyed its novelties. It brought back fond
memories of the backlights, iridescent posters, peace headbands, and neon flower power sticker’s my
generation proudly wore and displayed. It threw me back to the flower power competition we had on
the school bus for the most sticker contest. Although this movement meant many different things to
people the one message that rang true was the need for love and peace.
As my friend and I turned the bend where the Make Love-Not- War sign hung, there it was! The FTD
World Cup 2019 displays. That sign took on a whole new meaning, a sign of universal love and hope. We
couldn’t understand why the contestants were still working on their displays, and then the procession of
the Parade of Nations commenced. The synchronicity of this timing as the flags flew by made me think
about our universal journey towards love and hope.
Since we arrived late we realized the contestants had different design tasks to complete. We walked in
on design #3 “Table for two- Power of Flower’s,” an interpretation of love and hope. Design #4 had just
begun- Surprise Package, which was the last task before the 10 Semi- finalist's were chosen. The 10
Semi- finalist’s were Russia, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, Czeh Republic, Germany, Italy, Finland, and
Hungary. I was glad that China, and Finland won, I loved their creative style. The FTD World Cup runs
March1-3, but if you go I’m sure the displays will be there for your enjoyment.
The Flower Show never seems to disappoint any of the year’s I’ve gone it was always had an enjoyable
time. After visiting the displays you might want to sit in on a class, visit the wine bar, or do some
shopping. There are plenty of unique items at the vendor booths for your shopping pleasure. You also
may want to grab a bite at one of the many restaurants in the city. Hard Rock Café is right inside the
convention center, and Iron Hill Brewery is across the street from the convention center.
